Your opportunity

This is a business-facing engineering role. You will sit with business users, work out what is slowing them down, and turn those problems into AI and data solutions that reach production. The work starts with a conversation at someone’s desk, not a ticket in a queue.

Janus Henderson is undertaking a firm-wide AI transformation to become the most technologically sophisticated asset manager in the industry. Our AI capability sits in a single centralised function under the Head of AI, and Forward Deployed Engineering is the part of it that embeds with the business and builds what business units cannot stand up alone. You will work alongside the AI Enablement Partners, who surface and triage demand: where they establish what a team needs, you build it. Reporting to the Principal Forward Deployed Engineer, you own your solutions from first conversation to live running.

The work spans the full stack — sourcing internal and external data, curating it into views that answer the questions a desk actually asks, and making it reusable through Accio, our centralised MCP server. The most advanced work is investment engineering: building quantitative capability on Nexus, our agentic workspace, and taking it from one desk to a firm-wide offering such as relative-value signal generation. Your toolkit spans Python and SQL, LLMs and agent frameworks, MCP, Azure AI Foundry through the AI Team’s model gateway, Snowflake, and Azure with Terraform, Docker, and CI/CD.

What success looks like

  • You ship. What you build reaches production, is used by the business unit you built it for, and stays healthy once live.
  • Business users come to you early enough that you shape the problem rather than receive finished requirements.
  • Capability proven on one desk is exposed through Accio and Nexus so other teams consume it rather than rebuild it.
  • You need less direction over time, taking on engagements that are less defined and more technically demanding.

Your responsibilities

Embed with the business

  • Sit with business users — portfolio managers, analysts, traders, marketing, sales, HR, and operations — to understand their workflows, their data, and their day-to-day friction.
  • Partner with the AI Enablement Partners on escalated demand that business teams and citizen developers cannot deliver themselves.
  • Set realistic expectations on what is feasible, what it will take, and what it will not do.

Deliver solutions end to end

  • Design, build, and productionise bespoke, higher-complexity AI solutions, owning them through to live running.
  • Prototype with the business close at hand, then harden what works into production rather than leaving a demonstration.
  • Own the architecture and design decisions for your solutions, keeping them secure, scalable, and aligned to the enterprise core stack.
  • Take solutions through evaluation, observability, and our AI governance checkpoints, and keep them healthy afterwards.

Build investment capability on Nexus

  • Build advanced investment capability on Nexus and make it available across the firm.
  • Work with quantitative researchers and investment teams to take models and signals from one desk into a supported, firm-wide capability.
  • Put validation, monitoring, and reproducibility around signal output investment professionals rely on, and help take citizen developer workflows through to production.

Make data and capability reusable

  • Source data through APIs, vendor feeds, and enterprise systems, and build the ingestion pipelines that keep it flowing.
  • Curate raw data into business-focused views, and own its lineage, quality, and freshness.
  • Expose data and capability through Accio, and as skills, tools, and connectors on Nexus, so any approved agent or application can reach them.
  • Build reusable components rather than one-off integrations, and feed the patterns back to AI Architecture and AI Engineering.

Work across the AI function

  • Co-build enterprise core-stack deliverables with Percepta and AI Engineering, designed for transfer into business-as-usual.
  • Work with AI Security and AI Governance Implementation so solutions meet our security, data-privacy, and responsible-AI standards.
  • Keep current with LLM capabilities, agent patterns, and AI tooling, and bring back what is genuinely useful.

What to expect when you join our firm

  • Hybrid working and reasonable accommodations
  • Generous Holiday policies
  • Excellent Health and Wellbeing benefits including corporate membership to Wellhub
  • Paid volunteer time to step away from your desk and into the community
  • Support to grow through professional development courses, tuition/qualification reimbursement and more
  • Maternal/paternal leave benefits and family services
  • All employee events including networking opportunities and social activities
  • Lunch allowance for use within our subsidized onsite canteen

Must have skills

  • At minimum four years in a technical, business-facing engineering role — forward deployed engineering, solutions engineering, consulting-side software engineering, or engineering embedded in a business unit. Former technical founders are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong Python and SQL, and a track record of shipping production applications rather than prototypes.
  • Production experience with LLMs, covering prompt and context engineering, agent development, evaluation, and deployment at scale.
  • Hands-on experience building agentic capability — MCP servers, tools, skills, or connectors — for other systems and agents to consume.
  • Experience building data pipelines from APIs and enterprise systems, and modelling raw data into curated, business-facing views.
  • Working knowledge of a major cloud, ideally Azure, with CI/CD, containers, and infrastructure as code.
  • Excellent stakeholder skills. You can run discovery with a portfolio manager in the morning and write the pipeline in the afternoon.
  • High agency and comfort with ambiguity, and genuine interest in the business problem rather than only the technology.
  • Experience in a regulated environment where governance, compliance, and data sensitivity shape how solutions are built.

Nice to have skills

  • Asset management or financial services domain knowledge, particularly the investment process, front office workflows, or fixed income.
  • Quantitative investment concepts such as fair value, relative value, signal generation, or portfolio construction.
  • Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric / OneLake, or comparable enterprise data platforms.
  • Azure AI Foundry, model gateways, inference routing, or AI evaluation and observability in production.
  • TypeScript or a second production language, and front-end experience for user-facing AI applications.

Supervisory responsibilities

  • No. This is an individual-contributor role. Forward Deployed Engineers lead delivery of their own engagements and mentor less experienced engineers, but do not line-manage.

Potential for growth

  • Mentoring
  • Leadership development programs
  • Regular training
  • Career development services
  • Continuing education courses
